Mental Training for Performance & Peace: Introduction

Mental Training for Performance: Introduction

Created by Jackie Pirtle-Hall

Hi, Welcome to my course Mental Training for Performance. This course is presented in sessions. Each session is its own product and practice, and each one builds on the other- so I hope you continue until the last session and get more than you imagined from this work you are about to embark upon. I encourage you to check out my website blogs and get to know me, but let me quickly introduce myself.

I'm Jackie Pirtle Hall - former NCAA, NAIA, Multi Olympic Marathon Trials competitor, and fastest 50 mile female trail runner in 2020. And since I was taught to be humble and show instead of tell- this intro is going to be a bit awkward- ha! But on a real level- I love sports, running, reading, writing, and helping humans achieve goals and joy simultaneously.

My studies have led me to professional certifications in running, strength and conditioning, mobility, corrective exercise, and endurance sports nutrition. Along with above, my foundation lies in my university studies at The University of Missouri Columbia and St. Louis earned a Masters Degree in Professional Counseling with an emphasis on addiction and eating disorders and an undergrad degree as a Certified K-12 English Language Arts, Health, and Physical Education. I spent 16 years in the classroom instructing everything from grammar, ACT prep to women's weight training and speed and agility while also doing some coaching of both cross country and track and field before moving over to the weight room to help athletes build stronger tissues to avoid injury and perform optimally. I am now 40 and am not done! I love sport and being competitive with myself and others. My focus is to be the best version of me in order to reach any given goal my coach and I choose for the year. Whether it is to run a 5k under 16 minutes or qualify for another Olympic Trials, I always have something brewing! I think it’s important for you to know that your coach here is going through the same process as you in real time!

Now you know just a little about me, so let's talk about what this course can do for you to reach all of your goals!

Mental Training for Optimal Performance

Your mind plays the biggest role in your performance. Whether you are the most skilled on your team or fighting for that last spot- your mental focus has the power to change not just your performance, but your inner state and well being in participating in the sport you love.

With that said, flexing your "Mental Muscle" is a practice. Just like you run intervals, shoot baskets, repeat routines, or work on any performance- including academic-visualizing and readying your mind for peak performance comes with a daily consistent practice. Sometimes this practice finally convinces our brains that our self doubting limiting self beliefs are lies and that our expansive positive self beliefs are TRUE!

In reality, convincing ourselves of this does not require a long, arduous practice. Actually, think of all the miles, shots , hits or moves you do in a day to improve at your activity: hours worth of commitment throughout your week.

In fact, mental practice can take minutes each day. But, it must be intensive, thoughtful, and consistent.

You need to feed your mind the positive thoughts and perspective that will lead to an overall better outlook on your progress and performance while fueling the joy that is inherent in the journey of achieving a personal goal that lights YOUR heart on fire.

Ok, are you ready! Let's learn just how to do this change with perspective. After you go through this course, you will have to continue with the individual plan that you are about to build for yourself. And, keep it. Use it in all areas of your life- not just in your chosen activity. Use it for your academics, career, relationships, and anything you feel requires your “A” game. And anything that requires your "A” game is a truth that you are on a path of growth.

A path that will require you to set your "ego" aside and get truly honest by allowing yourself to fail, accept failure, get back up and wipe your face without judgment but new usable knowledge and then- KEEP GOING- with this new information. Because anything worth doing will have setbacks- you will have the roadmap to handle the ups, downs, in between all while growing your own self and desires!

Giddyup JPH Leaders! Here we go ;)

Oh, and one more thing, share what you learn with your teammates- we want our team, family, friends, even our toughest competitors to level up with us. Why? Well, if we truly want to find out how good we can be, we need to want the best from our competition.

The better those are around us, the more opportunity for us to grow personally. After all, who wants to win every race- where's the challenge, fun, and growth in that- it's time to desire the best for our teammates and ourselves! Share the gift of MENTAL TOUGHNESS! JOY IN COMPETITION!

Expect the first and second session to cover the root; In other words, we take the necessary time to identify what you truly want. What are YOUR goals and intentions? Not your coaches, your parents, or your teammates. This has to be for you and you alone. Of course it is fun to get your loved ones approval and adoration, it should never be the reason you are on this journey towards this dream.

Consecutive sessions will then teach strategies and practices that will enhance positive mental practices- there are many! Can’t wait to share with you how they have worked for me and just how they can bring joy and purpose back to your athletic life too! This course is not just for youngsters- my philosophy is that we can progress infinitely in our movement careers!
